Best Fastpitch Softball Bats

Thanks for taking the time to stop by our Fastpitch Softball blog.  As a group of coaches, players and parents, we decided to put this together to help new and advancing players and especially parents navigate the seemingly endless supply and styles of fast pitch softball bats.  Our team has been together for over 5 years and we have progressed from being a 10U rec team to a 14U competitive and travel team so the range of bats and training aids we have used throughout the years are extensive and while we may still not be experts, we have a really good understanding of who actually offers the hottest fastpitch softball bats.

As you look through our blog, you’ll see that we try to break it up into bats and training aids which include portable batting nets, hitting tees and pitching screens.

When I was growing up and playing baseball there were only 2 kinds of bats, wood and aluminum.  As I got older, technology improved and the composite bat was introduced which made things interesting.  Because kids continue to get bigger and stronger, baseball bat manufacturers have been trying to make aluminum and composite bats act more like wood so pitchers and corner infielders don’t get hurt, or worse yet…killed.

This isn’t true, however, for good fastpitch softball bats.  As technology improves, so do bats.  Even though girls are getting stronger thanks to improved training and nutrition, the bats keep getting hotter and hotter meaning the ball jumps off the bat more quickly and travels farther.  This is the main reason there is such a wide range of prices and unfortunately, what you pay for is usually what you get so if you are looking for cheap fastpitch softball bats, you’re going to get just that…cheap bats.  We do have girls of varying ability levels on our teams so we give reviews for bats of varying prices that the girls use as well.

How To Choose the Best Fastpitch Softball Bat For Your Player

The first question you need to answer is what do you want her bat to be made of.  The good news there is that there are really only 2 choices…aluminum and composite.

The pros of Aluminum Fast pitch softball bats

  1. Cost
  2. Thicker walls make bats more durable and last longer

The Cons of Aluminum bats

  1. Thicker walls allow less spring when hitting the ball, thus reducing the performance of the bat
  2. Aluminum is heavier than the composite material making longer bats heavier
  3. Small sweet spot

The pros of composite bats

  1. Thinner walls makes the ball jump off the bat faster because of springboard or trampoline action
  2. Composite material is lighter allowing a smaller player to swing a longer bat and get more leverage to hit the ball farther
  3. Larger sweet spot will allow the ball to travel farther, even when miss hit

Cons of composite bats

  1. Price
  2. Thinner walls means the bats are more likely to break, especially for higher level players and at lower temperatures.

After deciding which type of bat is right for your softball player, you’ll need to decide what weight and length to purchase.  Your first inclination might be to just buy what everyone else is using, but that’s not the thing to do.  To give a real life example, our team has gone, almost, exclusively with the Louisville Slugger Xeno bat, which we review extensively.  But, even within that one kind of bat, there are 3 different models, they each weigh a different amount, so if there is a bat that her team mate is using that she thinks she wants, be sure she has had a chance to swing the bat several times and maybe even use it in a game or two because you’ll find that there aren’t really any sporting goods stores out there that will let you try before you buy.  And, when you buy one online, once you unwrap it, you own it.  If you’re going into this without anything to compare it to, we have provided a size chart below, so look it over and read some reviews before you buy so you and your player aren’t disappointed with your purchase.
